A Luv Story of Life’s Journeys

Luv Stories of Maui Marital Bliss

Mom and Pops:

The Journey that started almost 40 years ago.

Our parents were both in their mid-30’s and figured they would never get married

despite our mom’s desire to get married and have kids. Mom was working as a nurse

and Dad was working at Mobil Oil refinery in Torrance with Kathy, our mom’s sister.

The first time Mom remembers meeting Dad was over Christmas dinner with her parents,

when he was invited as a guest of Kathy, whom he was dating at the time.

My mom remembers how handsome he looked and that her mother really liked him.

The next time she saw him was when she substituted for Kathy for their bowling league.

Mom did this several times despite the fact she would have trouble concentrating on bowling

because she would get butterflies in her stomach whenever she was around him.

Mom and Dad finally started dating in December 1979 and they found themselves

spending almost every day together. On a Sunday morning in March of 1980,

Dad looked over at Mom and said, “Why don’t we go for the big gamble?”

They were engaged that day and found themselves standing at the altar

that next Thursday at the MGM in Las Vegas.

Their first child was born November 16, 1980, a beautiful, amazing baby boy named

Christopher, followed by the most perfect daughter, Mary, on November 1, 1981.

They raised their children in Bellflower where they provided a loving home, always

supporting us both through all of our adventures—Soccer, Dancing, baseball, Drill

team, marching band and the many other activities we filled our days with over the

years.

Our parents loved entering contests for a chance to win a prize—from a mall

drawing for a power wheel car to the thousands of trips to Disneyland for a chance

to win various prizes (of which we won many). Looking back, our parents helped

create so many wonderful memories for us through these trips to Disneyland where

we spent many nights listening to Swing music at Carnation square and taking in

concerts to see The Monkeys and Roy Orbison at Videopolis. It is impossible for us

to visit Disneyland with our families and not recall what a special place it was in our

childhood.

Traveling has always been important to our parents. Our first motorhome trip to

Death Valley showed us what the sky really looks like away from city (so many stars)

and our first trip to Hawaii taught us two important lessons: ocean waves can be

dangerous but not as dangerous as putting ear drops in a child’s eyes :-O

We traveled across the country to see D.C. and that is where we captured fireflies for

the first time. We visited the Grand Canyon and ghost towns throughout California

and Arizona. We took countless trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin. It was in Laughlin

where we saw Batman on opening night at the midnight showing, an unforgettable

memory that helped shape Christopher’s love for Superheroes at a young age.

Our parents first cruises were with both of us when we were just teenagers.

It was then they found their love of cruising, especially on Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Valentine’s Day has always been a special day for my parents, but it was 7 years ago

on that day that our Mom was diagnosed with Breast cancer.

This was a difficult time for our family.

This changed the course of our Mom’s health, which has never recovered.

One thing has been constant throughout our lives, especially during these difficult times:

the love and care our Dad provided mom and the love they both have for each other,

which has only grown over the years.

Dad, you have been by our mom’s side every day,

serving as her rock and you will never know how grateful we both are

to everything you have done and continue to do for her.

Mom, you have been our family’s rock since the beginning, and we are so grateful for this.

We hope that this ceremony to renew your vows is as special for you both.

We love you both so much and we are grateful for everything you have done for us

in the past, in the present and in the future.

We want to thank you for always being there

for our families and us. Enjoy this day and your trip.

We look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing about it when you both return home.

Love Always,

Christopher and Mary

A LUV STORY OF LIFE’S JOURNEYS – BLESSING

Christopher and Mary sent in their heartfelt experiences of

Susan and Bill’s Luv Story

From which inspired the following Blessing of well wishes…

Their journey of Love started almost 40 years ago

in Torrance California

the city I grew up in… I fondly recall the Mobile Oil refinery

decorating some pumpkin shaped tanks on Halloween

to look like pumpkins

😉

On a Sunday morning in March of 1980, Bill looked over at Susan and said,

“Why don’t we go for the big gamble?”

They were engaged that day and found themselves

standing at the altar that next Thursday at the MGM in Las Vegas.

Looks like the big gamble paid off!

With two wonderfully blessed kids that spoke fondly of a loving home,

Always being supported through all of their adventures in

Soccer, Dancing, baseball, Drill team, marching band

and the many other activities we filled our days with over the years…

like countless Disneyland trips,

Concerts with The Monkeys and Roy Orbison at the Videopolis

Motor-homing it all over the country

And even taking the teenage kids along on their first ocean cruise!

One of my fondest memories is when my parents would take a few weeks off to cruise,

leaving me with a pocket of spending money, a fridge full of TV dinners and heaps of

mayhem, debauchery and all-night parties

:-O

Yes, the big gamble paid off…

And like their love that began 40 years ago as a ‘ripple on a pond’…

It has created an unstoppable wave of Love that will forever continue to build…

Each person that was ever blessed to see your smiles

or be touched by your Grace…

will pass those ‘good vibes’ along to countless others.

Deep in the core of our Being…

Everything is Always Already Alright…

And We will always be…

Forever Young.

The Start of 2020

Our business was doing great, but we still couldn’t afford to buy a house or a condo. Renting in Maui for another 30 years was not an option we wanted to take. Then, Bobbie Jo suggested we buy a sailboat that is comfortable to cruise and live in. By the end of January, we started looking for our new home.

After a long search, we found our dream boat in Mazatlan, Mexico. COVID-19 was not yet a concern when our boat hunt began, but masks were starting to appear at airports by the time we flew to Mazatlan. Originally, we had planned to get the boat ready as fast as possible to cover a full calendar for the busy wedding season. However, it was apparent our business was going to tank amid the pandemic, and the struggle went on until the end of the year.

Luckily, we scored an awesome condo for only $19 a day at Mazatlan. On the 10th day of our stay, we received the news that all harbors will be closed the next Monday morning. We thought we’d be stuck in Mexico longer, but another sailor advised us to leave before sunrise.

We felt the adrenalin of escaping the Mexican harbor master just before the sun rose that faithful day. The seas were rough as waves were building up in the tight channel that led us to the open ocean. We ended up anchored off an adorable little isle just a mile offshore. We enjoyed cruising to many spectacular anchorages and cute villages on our way to Puerto Vallarta, where we would depart for Maui on May 7. On May 30, 2020, we completed our 24-day passage from Mexico to Maui.
