By Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh

We all need a spiritual dimension to our life.
With mindfulness we can see the poetry and beauty
all around us.
We can see the miracles of life.
We get deeply in touch with our cosmic body.
Every second, every minute, every hour,
becomes a diamond.

A Spiritual ‘dimension’ is essentially a

balanced psychological and philosophical perspective.
Early on a personal Spiritual Path,
all the basic and essential aspects of:
Right thought
Right speech
Right action…
Are presented in the Buddha’s Noble Eight-Fold Path.
Ask yourself:
“Are my thoughts based on mindful loving kindness?…
Or
Am I thinking in ways to make myself seem cool, self-centered,
better than someone else, jealousy, greedy or grandiose.
Correct your ‘wrong thoughts’ before they become wrong speech and actions.
Be mindful of what you are about to say or do for the same reasons.
Once you’ve acted out with mindless and hurtful speech or actions…
It’s like toothpaste…

It is impossible to properly get it back in the tube.
Along with learning to liberate oneself from attachment…
The attachment to the outcome of any issue.
Abide in equanimity equally during good or bad outcomes…
Always remember,
Your True happiness is not based on the outcomes of materialistic drama…
Anything in this ‘here & now’ is material based.
Attachment to ‘things’…
For example, my son totaled two used cars…

I had absolutely no concern for the beater cars…
Only that my son was ok.
Granted…
Now I have a nice new sports car…
And I must prepare myself not to be attached if it is damaged…
Indeed,
There is quite a bit of difference in how easy one can remain…
Un-attached.
But,
At all levels…
It is liberating from the pain & suffering
we typically create for ourselves otherwise.
Regarding:
“We get deeply in touch with our cosmic body.”
There are two basic parts to what ‘we’ call…
“our self”.
There of course is … the body.
Which along with the ego, is what most people ignorantly consider…
Themselves.
However,
Any earnest aspirant will learn early along the ‘Path’ of “Self-Realization”
‘we’ are NOT that.
But,
Nevertheless…
The body is not a trivial part of ‘our’ existence.
It represents the highest level of evolution since the last big bang…
Our bodies are literally made from cosmic space dust
and the elements of this earth.
The energy and elements of our body never end with death…
They simply take on other natural forms.
Yet,
Most folks dream of going to some sort of “heaven” or new life… of sorts…
But,
No one contemplates becoming compost!
But still…
That’s about all the body and its elements will do…
That’s all they are supposed to do.
In the Non-Dual perspective…

Our ‘cosmic body’ … the ineffable ‘eternal’ part…
Pure conscious or Awareness…
Becomes something like:
“at one with it all” …
Inseparable from all that is.
I often have a Samadhi with the leaves in the forest.
I feel inseparable from the fresh young green leaves…
And the older leaves, and the leaves falling from the trees,
the leaves laying on the top of the path, and the leaves
turning into compost underneath…
“I am that”.

When my body dies, my elements will go on as natural elements do…
And
As an eternal ‘cosmic body’…
There will be an inseparable awareness of that compost…
And all that is…
This is…
“The miracle of Life”.
In this ‘here & now’ an earnest aspirant,
after attaining the deeper end of the ‘Path’…
Achieves a higher state of consciousness called
“Samadhi”… a state of being at one with something…
Typically the object of meditation.
This state can also arise naturally by anyone at anytime…
Particularly in a mental and physical pause of movement…
When something like an object of meditation
catches our awareness in such a way that we are literally
‘at one with it’…
All other distractions fade into the peripheral…
I have had many experiences of ‘Samadhi’ in my life…
A few were natural events in which I sort of zoned out of normal awareness
and zoomed in something that just happened to catch my awareness
in such a way that ‘I’ became inseparable from what I was aware of…
There was no more me, being aware of an object…
There was no experiencer, experiencing the experience…
There was just… a one-ness.
I’ve had this with:
a colony of ants, the sunset, the light sparkling off a body of water,
the existence of a tree, and the life cycle of leaves… and many more…
Once my Spiritual Path ripened deep enough…
I gained an even deeper form of Samadhi in which
the object of meditation evolved to an ‘object-less’ aspect.
The ‘effort’ to maintain a ‘one-pointedness’ became…
Effortless.
No longer was the object a material object or
the material aspect of the breath…
It becomes more like a feeling.
One just surrenders to this feeling… and that feeling is…
Love.

Our True Nature is ineffable, words cannot describe it.
But it could be described as ‘Pure Awareness or Pure conscious’…
Pure, meaning that, one can be aware or conscious of an experience…
But,
There is no thought behind that awareness.
This is the goal of deep insight mediation
that leads to various states of deeper and higher consciousness
with various degrees and aspects of Samadhi arising…
At this stage of meditation…
There is no longer a meditator meditating…
There is no ‘self’ that is doing … the doing.
In fact,
A remarkable state of being ‘disembodied’
from that aspect of ourselves we’ve been refining our whole lives…
The aspect of there being a ‘self’ within us that calls all the shots…
That makes ‘us’ feel like ‘we’ are in control.
There is no such “I”.
All of that imaginary ‘self’ perspective
is just an illusion we spend our whole life creating.

When one decides to take the big journey along a personal Spiritual Path…
The essential nature and goal is
‘Self-Realization’…
Who is it that ‘we’ think ‘we’ are?!? …
It is part of the ineffable nature of our True Selves…
It can only be answered in the wordless Wisdoms
of this deep “Insight meditation”.
Somewhere during this experience…
“you” are left behind, yet…
the journey travels along like being on a cosmic raft…
It feels like bliss, rapture…
The body went from being so comfortable… that it can’t move…
And yet, ‘you’ don’t want to move.
Likewise,
The mind becomes so still, so calm, no thoughts appear…
So peaceful,
you just don’t want the burden of a thought to come along and get in the way…
And even more so…
There simply are no thoughts thinking about having … no thought.
Mental and physical placidness is the first identifiable aspects
before all aspects become transcended…
The blissful feeling of love in the most serene aspects
fill in the floating cosmic raft sensations of full and complete surrender.
What happens next is…
So ineffable that it takes hours, days or even weeks
for one’s mind to attempt to contemplate the experience.
But yet,
It is these wordless Wisdoms that answers the questions of…
“Who am I”…
But,
One will finally know…
“I am that”.
This is…
“The miracle of Life”.
