What it Profits a Man to Gain the World and Lose His Soul

There has been a seismic shift this year. Not just politically, but morally.

The most powerful man in the world didn’t just become more dangerous. He ripped the mask off. What was always there is now out in the open. The cruelty. The truth.

We are ruled by a billionaire class of abusers and exploiters who see working people as tools, the poor and sick as liabilities, and non white people as a threat to be eliminated. That is not hyperbole. That is how they operate. And they will do literally anything to hold onto power.

We already saw it on a private island where children were destroyed while the rich protected each other. And in America, almost no one faced real consequences. That alone should have shattered every remaining illusion.

But what has been most sickening is watching people who claim the name of Christ continue to stand with these men. Watching churches that preach righteousness protect systems that shield predators. Not because they do not know. Because they do.

They are not defending morality. They are defending access to power. They are clinging to the lie that God uses the worst people imaginable to do holy work. This is not a holy lie. It is dangerous. And it is evil.

The white evangelical church is not confused. It is compromised. This is self inflicted spiritual blindness born from the hunger for dominance and control.

When Jesus asked what it profits a man to gain the world and lose his soul, he was not being poetic. He was stating a fact. Power has a price. Empire has a price. And the bill is being paid with our collective conscience.

The church needs to come out of the empire. Out of political idolatry. Out of this grotesque bargain. Come back to the wilderness. Come back to justice. Come back to mercy. Come back to the poor and the marginalized.

Time is short. And nobody gets to pretend they didn’t see it anymore.

Save your soul.

The Start of 2020

Our business was doing great, but we still couldn’t afford to buy a house or a condo. Renting in Maui for another 30 years was not an option we wanted to take. Then, Bobbie Jo suggested we buy a sailboat that is comfortable to cruise and live in. By the end of January, we started looking for our new home.

After a long search, we found our dream boat in Mazatlan, Mexico. COVID-19 was not yet a concern when our boat hunt began, but masks were starting to appear at airports by the time we flew to Mazatlan. Originally, we had planned to get the boat ready as fast as possible to cover a full calendar for the busy wedding season. However, it was apparent our business was going to tank amid the pandemic, and the struggle went on until the end of the year.

Luckily, we scored an awesome condo for only $19 a day at Mazatlan. On the 10th day of our stay, we received the news that all harbors will be closed the next Monday morning. We thought we’d be stuck in Mexico longer, but another sailor advised us to leave before sunrise.

We felt the adrenalin of escaping the Mexican harbor master just before the sun rose that faithful day. The seas were rough as waves were building up in the tight channel that led us to the open ocean. We ended up anchored off an adorable little isle just a mile offshore. We enjoyed cruising to many spectacular anchorages and cute villages on our way to Puerto Vallarta, where we would depart for Maui on May 7. On May 30, 2020, we completed our 24-day passage from Mexico to Maui.
