Intro to Luv Stories of Maui Marital Bliss Kylie and Sven – Luv Story

In July 2010 Sven’s wife Jane died after a 3-year battle with cancer.  During this time, he was also involved in a business in the sustainability sector.  After Jane died Sven sold his business, took stock, and decided living and working in purposeful and sustainable spaces and on meaningful things was really the only thing that mattered after his former life in the corporate/tech space.  He started helping a number of not-for-profit organizations and startups on a pro bono basis with his business development skillset.

Sven met Kylie in May 2012 at a Cambodian/Australian social enterprise, Empowering Communities, just after her year long stint as its CEO.  By this stage Kylie had completed 4 degrees in the areas of commerce, project management and social impact and she was also working with two other not for profit organizations in Western Australia.

In early 2013, Kylie had asked Sven to meet up to discuss more ideas and concepts about their working space. Sven, being a bit of a dolt when it comes to reading romantic signals thought these meetings were pretty much business (as well as a growing friendship) and he came armed with discussions about business, ideology and philosophy about life, religion, politics etc.   Kylie, on the other hand, was admittedly a bit stunted in the ‘expressing feelings’ piece and it took a few goes over a couple of months to Easter in 2013 for Kylie to give off more blunt signals that there could be something more between them.  Sven then took another couple of lurching steps into what became a true romance when they both holidayed seaside in Albany, Western Australia in June 2013.  That weekend, June 7/8 (neither are sure which), became their first anniversary… Kylie is a number nut and loves 8, and both being headstrong, it was agreed they would celebrate over 2 days.

Over Christmas/New Year 2013/14 Kylie and Sven not only moved in together but took their first overseas trip together, not any old trip but 2 months round the world to Europe, US, Mexico and then home via Singapore.  Many couples break up over being thrown together so quickly and intensely but not Kylie and Sven. There they cemented the essence of their relationship, a very loyal one, full of commitment to each other, a loving respect for each other, and patience, all of which were needed to get through a healthy dose of tension over being so very different in other ways – Sven often joked that he was the soft, warm, relaxed one, and Kylie was the cold, hard driven one in the relationship.

Over the next 2 years both grew closer together, getting to know each other more and more intimately.  Kylie left her full-time job and started working with Sven under their consulting banner, Turnaround.  They focussed their efforts on projects that meant something to them.  In August 2015 they went to see Wayne Dyer.  Sven had a Buddhist like spiritual belief that helped him before and after the passing of Jane and both of them liked Wayne’s philosophy. They really enjoyed the weekend with Wayne and resolved to see him at his Maui weekend (January 2016) on their next big round-the-world trip over Chsitmas/New Year 2015-16.  However, 2 weeks after seeing Wayne vibrant and healthy and inspiring in Brisbane, Australia, they woke to the shock news that Wayne had died suddenly.

Sven was not one to plan trips – always taking destination inspiration minute by minute as though the universe was going to decide which way he should go.  Kylie liked this but was also a big planner, so this caused some tension.  In any case, in November before they set off with a one-way ticket to Europe, Sven decided now was the moment to seal his commitment with a ring.  He had two rings made that fitted together.  Taking inspiration from Wayne, who’s favorite number was 18 one symbolized the ‘oneness’ and the other the ‘eternity’ (infinity =8), which he wanted to share with Kylie, and which they both wanted to share as a spiritual belief for everything and everyone.  The rings went in secret in Sven’s hand-luggage until the 18th/Dec/16 (whose numbers also added up to 18) at which point he gave them to Kylie at a Christmas market in Dresden, Germany.  Kylie loved the thoughtfulness – not because of the location, but purely because of the numbers.  She is a ‘numbers’ freak and loved the synchronicity of not only her favourite 8 number but their new favourite ‘18’ from Wayne Dyer.

Now, Sven was never a big-wedding kind of guy and always dreamed of eloping or a small discrete ceremony.  Kylie on the other hand always dreamed of a wedding with all her friends, family, bridesmaids, dresses and everything. So you can imagine how shocked Sven was when she suggested a few days after the engagement that maybe they could get married on this trip, impromptu (for their first wedding at least – another would be had at home some time later with family and friends).  She had researched the least-complex places to officiate the union (as she loves research – on everything!)..  Kylie discovered that Hawaii required far less ‘paperwork’ and notice periods than any of the other countries they were visiting. Coincidence?  Sven didn’t think so.  Sven was overwhelmed but would not pass up the chance to marry Kylie on this trip as he thought it was destined now. And so, it was.

The Wayne Dyer weekend was to be held the week of the 23-24th of January 2016.  Now Wayne was gone, and Sven and Kylie simply couldn’t get to Maui by the 18th January (for perfect synchronicity of numbers), but they could get there for a wedding on the 26th January – and 2+6=8, Kylie’s favourite number.

So here we are.

Wayne Dyer brought us to Kaanapali because that’s where his weekend was to be and that’s where he lived.  But instead of attending a conference on how we are all one in this world, and that the only thing that matters is love, instead, Kylie and Sven are sealing this belief in marriage instead.  The universe does work!

They believe it is the luckiest number, as it brings great wealth…

And not just monetarily, it allows one to abide in a wealth of happiness that is not affected by materialist concerns.

The Start of 2020

Our business was doing great, but we still couldn’t afford to buy a house or a condo. Renting in Maui for another 30 years was not an option we wanted to take. Then, Bobbie Jo suggested we buy a sailboat that is comfortable to cruise and live in. By the end of January, we started looking for our new home.

After a long search, we found our dream boat in Mazatlan, Mexico. COVID-19 was not yet a concern when our boat hunt began, but masks were starting to appear at airports by the time we flew to Mazatlan. Originally, we had planned to get the boat ready as fast as possible to cover a full calendar for the busy wedding season. However, it was apparent our business was going to tank amid the pandemic, and the struggle went on until the end of the year.

Luckily, we scored an awesome condo for only $19 a day at Mazatlan. On the 10th day of our stay, we received the news that all harbors will be closed the next Monday morning. We thought we’d be stuck in Mexico longer, but another sailor advised us to leave before sunrise.

We felt the adrenalin of escaping the Mexican harbor master just before the sun rose that faithful day. The seas were rough as waves were building up in the tight channel that led us to the open ocean. We ended up anchored off an adorable little isle just a mile offshore. We enjoyed cruising to many spectacular anchorages and cute villages on our way to Puerto Vallarta, where we would depart for Maui on May 7. On May 30, 2020, we completed our 24-day passage from Mexico to Maui.
